Three valuable design lessons from Boston Engineering's development of BIOSwimmer

Here are three lessons Boston Engineering learned while developing BIOSwimmer that researchers and engineers can use to advance technology and develop innovative solutions to complex problems.

3 Key Lessons from Boston Engineering's Biomimetic BIOSwimmer

A recent blog post from Boston Engineering provided insights into how they used biomimicry to develop the innovative BIOS Swimmer underwater vehicle. Here are 3 key takeaways:

1. Reverse engineering nature is a valuable innovation strategy

Rather than starting from scratch, Boston Engineering closely studied the tuna to uncover millions of years of natural evolution. Using tools like 3D scanning and muscle/skeletal analysis, they reverse-engineered the fish to understand and replicate its most advantageous features. This provided proven design blueprints tailored to the problem.

2. Focus on real-world testing early

Boston Engineering moved quickly to physical prototypes and field testing rather than getting stuck in simulation. Challenging the biomimetic designs in real maritime environments revealed critical flaws and areas for improvement that computer models could not. Rapid cycles of testing, data collection and design refinement enabled the biomimetic approach to truly evolve in the wild.

3. Cross-discipline collaboration was key

By bringing together biologists, mechanical engineers, software developers and naval technologists, Boston Engineering could draw from multiple perspectives. This multifaceted expertise ensured they fully understood the salmon's form and functions and how to translate those into an effective robotic system. Blending biology and engineering was vital.
