Addressing Next-Generation Security Challenges through Innovation and Adaptability

2024 Technology Outlook front coverThis article is an excerpt from the Boston Engineering 2024 Technology Outlook. For a copy of this article and the complete publication, visit the 2024 Technology Outlook digital download page.

Boston Engineering Research and Development continues to focus on the emerging requests and requirements from our military, most specifically, the challenges in collection and dissemination if critical information.

The global environment in 2024 has our military shifting from the challenges of land-based asymmetric warfare and counter-terrorism operations to the challenges of competition with emerging and evolving adversaries.

The National Defense Strategy of 2022 identified several challenges within this new security environment, including countering anti-access/area denial environments, addressing all-domain (i.e., air, water, land, cyber, space) threats to the US homeland, addressing challenges in the cyber and space domains, and countering the continued proliferation and ubiquity of uncrewed systems and advanced maritime capabilities.

For example, the further commoditization and proliferation of uncrewed systems, as well as the development of maritime specific technologies, will greatly impact our developments and strategies for 2024.

BioswimmerThe availability of more capable communication systems combined with our data management and analysis techniques (from digital engineering to artificial intelligence or machine learning techniques) also promise to have a substantial impact on how we generate our solutions to many of these problems.

In the coming year, Boston Engineering’s ongoing programs for remote command and control (C2) of underwater vehicles and maritime profiling data collection systems will each generate disruptive capabilities for end users. Our current technologies provide the access to, collection of, and offloading of critical, targeted, and difficult to obtain data. Our emerging technologies will provide access to data that is needed in even more challenging maritime environments, given increasing global tensions on the world’s oceans in 2024.

To enable practical use of our new technologies, we will marinize (i.e., make something suitable for use in the ocean), develop and integrate new sensors and other payloads, implement novel propulsion/maneuverability/obstacle negotiation techniques, and provide deployment and recovery approaches for delivering sensors into the current ocean environment.

Continued developments related to sustainment robotics will provide new capabilities to our nation’s shipyards for inspection and remediation of issues as well as other important challenges with versatile, disruptive robotic solutions.

Primary Initiatives of Robotics Research & Development

Boston Engineering robotics developments will continue our track record of innovations that provide the opportunity to save lives, reduce costs and financial losses, and support the defense of our nation.

Boston Engineering looks forward to these Research & Development opportunities in the coming year.
