FOSAR Technology and the Future of Sustainment Robotics

2024 Technology Outlook front coverThis article is an excerpt from the Boston Engineering 2024 Technology Outlook. For a copy of this article and the complete publication, visit the 2024 Technology Outlook digital download page.

The future of complex electromechanical systems (robotics) looks to me both promising and necessary. As an industry, we are currently operating at the convergence of robotics and digital tools.

I see firsthand what solutions using robotics paired with remote access to data, information,
and experts can bring to industry and defense. As the challenges we face in the 21st century
grow, the innovative solutions required will be powered by leveraging extensive experience
and integrating emerging technologies.

I believe our challenges will be met through integrated and interactive robotic systems
providing remote access, increased interaction with experts, increased data and information
availability, and increased safety.

The project's objective is to capture and apply the knowledge of an aging workforce, while
extending the reach of experienced employees, providing remote operation, remote training, in
situ visual access, and other smart, connected tools. Targeting Department of Defense
sustainment initiatives, FOSAR addresses the challenges posed by a shrinking workforce and
aims to keep military maintenance facilities competitive.

FOSAR operates as a national-level initiative, bringing together Boston Engineering and other partners to create common tools and capabilities under a unified platform. By fostering commonality of design and operation, utilizing open software development, and integrating advanced sensors and communications equipment, FOSAR optimizes sustainment efforts. The inclusion of digital tools for data visualization and network connectivity further enhances the overall solution, creating a comprehensive and forward-looking approach to both sustainment
and robotics.

As I look to the coming year, I see advancements in the integrations of robotics and digital solutions, as seen in the Boston Engineering FOSAR system.
