A Look Back on 2024
Continued adoption of AI and big data in healthcare is transforming medical diagnostics and treatment planning.
In the first half of 2024 alone, the FDA cleared over 100 AI/ML-Enabled Medical Devices. The lion’s share of these (~75%) where related to automated radiographic image processing to help plan procedures related to cardiology, orthopedics, gastroenterology/urology, neurology, ophthalmology, dentistry and more.
Another 10% were related to assessment of cardiology monitoring system parameters with prediction of the likelihood of developing life-threatening conditions. Most all of these approvals were for products used to assist medical professionals with the diagnosis and preparation of treatment options for their patients.
As AI and big data continue to drive innovation in medical technology, these advancements are reshaping patient care by enhancing precision, improving early detection, and optimizing treatment strategies across multiple specialties.

In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning have emerged as powerful tools for assisting diagnostics and surgical procedures.
Accurate diagnosis is a fundamental aspect of global healthcare systems. In the US, approximately 5% of patients receive an incorrect diagnosis, with errors being particularly common for serious medical conditions, and carrying the risk of serious patient harm.
In the Invitro Diagnostics market, the use of AI will grow as research continues to confirm that the technology can perform advanced diagnostics. Not only will AI be able to provide a diagnosis quickly, in many cases it will do so remotely- improving access and decreasing costs.

AI is developing the capability to review patient charts and suggest a test or a medication. By integrating information from many different data sources—such as the latest treatment guidelines or research insights—at the operating table or bedside, AI will aid clinical decisions
and enhance physicians’ judgment.
Radiology is benefiting from AI and machine learning. Evolution in hardware and software applications has led to an escalating number of tasks performed by machines. Diagnostic learning algorithms now perform tasks that were previously limited to humans, thus indicating that these algorithms have a large amount of application potential.
In minimally invasive procedures, AI is expected to enhance surgical decision-making before, during, and after a surgical procedure. AI provides surgeons with a new set of eyes and new perspectives, introducing new methodologies to existing surgical procedures and subsequently standardizing practices. By gathering data analytics from all over the world, AI can compile varying images, recognize microscopic differences, and introduce new trends.
As the engineering landscape continues to evolve, Boston Engineering is committed to proactively integrating cutting-edge technologies and methodologies into the solutions it delivers, ensuring that clients stay at the forefront of industry trends and maintain a competitive edge in 2024 and beyond.
